Securus Technologies is a company headquartered in Dallas, Texas. It is dedicated to providing parole tracking, government information management solutions and detainee communications in a bid to make the world a safer place. The company is currently serving approximately 2,600 prisons and jails in about 45 states. “Inmates using phones in the cells can be very dangerous to the people out here”, explains Mr. Johnson who is a paid consultant at Securus Technologies. He tells his story that really helps to motivate to keep phones away from the inmates. As he was working in southern California in Lee Correctional Institution with his primary role being to impound contraband. He had worked in this position for more than 15 years before he one day heard a bang on his door. The person came in and shot him six times in the chest and the stomach.
Johnson says that two weeks before the incidence, he had caught a big package of contraband that was valued at $50,000 by the prison gang. Johnson underwent a lot of surgeries and it was a miracle that he survived. The inmate communicated with Sean Echols, the person who allegedly wanted to kill Johnson, using a contraband phone and was paid through reloadable green dot card. The wake-up call for Johnson was a girl killed in Georgia in the arms of her mother. The murder was ordered by three inmates. It is claimed that the uncle of the girl did something the three never approved of resulting in the cold blood murder.
Another recent case that showed that phones were being used at a very high rate by inmates was the video shared by Securus Technology. The video featured an inmate who was serving 10 years. Jose Ariel Rivera was brandishing a knife. Looking at his profile, this was not the first time he had been caught using a cell phone in the cells. Issues like the three mentioned above are what the Securus Technology is supposed to detect and prevent. If the Securus’ Wireless Containment Solutions had been installed in the correctional facilities that had these inmates were in, the incidents would not have occurred.
The people working in the correctional facilities believe that controlling cell phone use in the prisons should be considered the topmost safety hazard. In July 2017, Securus provided data it had collected using the said wireless containment solution. This data showed the high rates in the usage of contraband phones by inmates and the efficiency of their technology. In a period of one year, from July 2016 to July 2017, Securus used the technology and managed to detect and prevent more than 1.7 million illegal communications. This was just an attempt in eight U.S. prisons and jails. With the Securus WCS installed in the correctional facilities, a lot of dangerous cases will be curbed.
